Still with no car, we decided to take the Strassenbahn over to Heidelberg to explore its famous castle - Schloss Heidelberg. It was quite a climb to get up to the castle, but well worth it! It was built between 1400 and 1544. It is an enormous red-sandstone fortress and is undeniably picturesque. It is one of the most famous historic monuments in Germany. The kids loved it! I find it hard to comprehend that these were built so long ago! After we explored the schloss(castle) we walked along the haupstrasse ( a long, pedestrian street filled with shops and restaurants) until we found a great little place to have lunch. Only being in Germany for a few days, it was refreshing to have an English menu. Lunch was great and it was off to climb the bell tower of the old-gothic church on the west of the market square. The church was built around 1400. It was a very dizzying climb (the steps go up in a circle) but it had a beautiful view. We had a great day! A little shopping of course rounded out our exploration of nearby Heidelberg.
